Truffle nose The truffle dog has already become a legend: there are tales, awards, feasts dedicated to the tabuj , as “Fidos”, whose sense of smell allows them finding the precious tuber under various centimetres of earth/ground, are called in Piedmont dialect. There are also idioms referring to tabuj and those who can discover well-hidden facts and things are usually called “truffle dog”.
But which is the ideal truffle dog? There is no rule. Some indicate the Lagotto Romagnolo as the best dog for the hunting of hypogenous mushrooms. However, there are many breeds which are involved in the search, particularly hunting dogs, but also crossbreed dogs of different size. There are also training centres for truffle dogs.
